4USANA compared the daily dosage of all listed ingredients in four leading U.S. nutritional supplements with those of the USANA ESSENTIALS. Researchers calculated the "minimum additional cost" for a month's supply of ingredients that would be needed in order to match the nutrient levels in the ESSENTIALS. First, a unit cost was established for each ingredient - in the same form as is used in the USANA ESSENTIALS - as though purchased as a stand-alone supplement. The retail price used was based on the most economical form listed at www.vitaminshoppe.com on May 16, 2000. The montly cost for each ingredient was then calculated by multiplying the difference in daily dosage by the unit cost of the ingredient, and by 30 days per month. A credit was given if a competitor's product contained more of a particular ingredient or an ingredient not included in the ESSENTIALS. Where no stand-alone product was found (e.g., cruciferours, nickel, alpha-carotene, and tin), no credit or additional cost was calculated. The "minimum additional cost" comprises the sum of all the individual ingredient costs.
